Big East conference commissioner Mike Tranghese will leave his job next year.

He has been commissioner since 1990. He said Thursday the conference was enjoying unprecedented success and this was the time to go. He will leave next year at the end of June.

Under Tranghese, the Big East expanded to 16 schools and became the nation's largest Division I-A conference. He was commissioner during the league's inaugural football season in 1991.

Tranghese has been with the conference since it formed in 1979 and was its first full-time employee.
